Maggie Feeny

Maggie's professional career started out as both a successful ceramicist and painter in Brighton, she now however works solely in paint and has recently moved to Sancreed in Cornwall. The untamed, ever changing nature of land, sea and sky are the inspiration behind her desire to paint; to express through colour and texture those feelings of freedom and abandonment felt when out in the landscape. The intention of her work is to evoke in the viewer similar sensations of spaciousness and wonder.
Her work is a process of creating a moment where colour and form work in harmony, echoing similar unfettered experiences in the natural world. Maggie works mostly from the memory of places she has walked and sketched, for her this enables more freedom for abstraction of marks and choice of colour.

My initial inspiration is the experience of being out in the rural and coastal landscape. Sometimes there are direct references to it, but these are often incidental. My actual intention is more about capturing something of the memory of being there; a certain energy associated with the weather, sensations of freedom, abandonment and the wonder of nature. My work is therefore more of an emotional response to memories of places I might have been. By playing endlessly with layers of colour and texture I hope the paintings transfer to the viewer a similar feeling of energy, space and the awe of nature.
